“The only thing better than making music, is making it with friends.”

4 Highr: bandleader, musician and producer for performances and recordings

When I was a kid, I wanted to be “a sax man” after hearing a song (that will go unnamed) on the radio featuring a gaudy, house-rockin baritone saxophone. My mom already had a guitar, so she said I could take guitar lessons instead. I began studying with the guitar sensei of Montgomery, Jimmy “Super Cool Lick” Mills, at age ten, and I soon found the joy of recording myself at home on my dual tape deck and jamming with friends around camp fires, which is where Jerry Chapman taught me to play slide… Thanks Jerome! I began performing around the Southeast when I was 14 with a band some friends and I put together called Far South Movement. That led to meeting, working with and learning from other great groups in the area like Blues Old Stand and Secondhand Jive and well versed jazz and blues players on the Alabama scene like Sam Williams, Ike Bell, Bo Berry, Kina Boto, Jay Berry, John Bull, Spike Graham, Gate Band, Cloverdale Band, Debbie Bond, Mike McCracken, Microwave Dave, Little Whit & Big Bo, Sean Nowell, and Topper Price.

In my twenties, I quit playing out as much and began to focus on becoming a better musician, so I went to some music schools and began to work as a sideman at whatever music gigs I could get to expand my horizons and abilities. I studied music composition, performance and technology at Birmingham Southern, Berklee, & UAB, and I spent time learning with guitarists Wayne Krantz and Mark Kimbrell. I worked all kinds of gigs and learned to fill the guitar and music director duties for recording studios, churches, musical theatres and events of every shape and size. I got back into engineering and producing recordings and fell in love with drum machines, sequencers, samplers, Gospel music, resophonic guitars and pedal steels. I bring a real specific dynamic to the music that is uniquely “me” and gives the mix a little extra grease. I love making my own music, but I love collaborating with others even more, so please reach out to me about performing at your event or helping bring your recording project to life. I perform with my own groups and am available to book as a bandleader, producer and sideman on guitars, steels & mandolin for live shows and recording sessions. Please hit me up here if you’d like to discuss booking a show or collaborating on a project.

I’ve been blessed to work with some amazing people over the years and have collaborated on stages and in studios with a diverse range of artists, musicians and producers including: Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Little Whit & Big Bo, Blues Old Stand, Sean Nowell, Secondhand Jive, Topper Price, J.M.
